The Grüner Strom Label e.V. Association (“GSL” or “Our Association”) was established in 1998 at the initiative of EUROSOLAR, the European Association for Renewable Energy, by several non-profit environmental organizations, including consumer information groups and peace-furthering organizations. At that time, certification programs for green electricity did not exist. Farsighted leaders and energy experts like Klaus Traube, the then spokesman for energy policy of BUND, and Dr Hermann Scheer (†), president emeritus of EUROSOLAR, developed a set of exacting criteria for underpinning the accreditation for green electricity. Grüner Strom was the first seal of approval for green electricity in Germany.
Since 2013, besides Grüner Strom, our Association has also issued the Grünes Gas label for environmentally friendly biogas. The goal of certifying products is to advance ecologically sustainable energy supply and to increase transparency and credibility in the green electricity and biogas markets.

Our Association’s Supporters Are:
GSL indicates support of the group of seven non-profit organizations referenced above. Their focus is environmental protection, oriented towards spurring the development of renewable forms of energy and the economical, efficient and resource saving use of energy. Through their voluntary role in the Board of Directors and in the General Assembly of our Association they are actively involved in the certification to this day. Any changes in the criteria for example – the most salient requisite for underpinning the accreditation – must be discussed and approved by them.
The Board of Directors (the “Board”) is comprised of the Chair and two Deputy Chairs. The Directors, elected by the General Assembly for a term two years, come from the group of environmental organizations that support and endorse GSL.

The Board makes decisions on important matters associated with the GSL certification and the granting of GSL’s seals of approval, unless they involve decisions, which must be taken by the General Assembly. The Board has thereby taken on the management role as well.
In July 2006 an official headquarters was opened in Bonn in order to be able to execute the certification process as carefully as required. Our office serves as liaison between the Providers and the bodies of our Association. We are a partner in the regular certification process and provide advice and guidance to the Providers regarding the use of funds and work with the public on behalf of the Association.
